The Return of Girth

GIRTH
Far beyond the various meanings that one can think of the word “girth”, this musical band is a new and powerful outfit born in L.A. with a very seductive music rooted in the blues, soul, funk and rock. The horns along the arousing voice of Dena, the swiveling bass lines of Smokey and a rhythm section including drummer Ben and percusionist Demian Arriaga (West 8 Five, Gary Cherone) from Venezuela, provide the foundation for a music with traces of melodies that evoke the mysterious whiffs of a crime scene, but also a bluesy feel that extends to the pinnacle of the most sensuous realms of intimacy with Dena Deadly leading the way. Her strong, yet sublte voice induces you to drop dead to the talents of her voice and her gorgeous look, deadly indeed. Try the song SLICK!
GIRTH, as many bands are born, came out of a group of friends with a common interest in music. As Demian says: “Led by Zed and Dena, we are friends with a musical taste going from Ella, Megadeth, Dr. Dre and Red Hot Chili Peppers”. So, it was rather natural that Dean Deadly whose vocal talents are known in L.A., started singing with another troupe called DA RIFFS, a producing duet piloted by E-Rock and Zed Kelly who are known across the USA for its music for video games. DA RIFFS and SOMETHING FOR ROCKETS, another L.A. group which included Barry Davis and Rami Perlman, found the common ground that eventually became GIRTH.
Although a novel band, GIRTH masterfully blends the various genres mentioned before. It is, in my opinion, a band with so much ahead of it, but with an already solid sound and clearly defined concept that leans towards a vibe once called “acid jazz”, a term I merely use as a reference, that included greats like Brand New Heavies, Guru, Galliano, US3 and Jamiroquai all of which based their sounds in the groove of the 70’s inspired by such superbands like Ohio Players, Kool & Gang and Earth Wind & Fire, among others. As one can see in the picture, the intimidating look of its members contrasts with the seductive style of the music, a whirling sound that unavoidably leads to the visually arresting Dena. But don’t play the fool, this music is powerful and strong, a genuine impelling force driven by the talents of Zed, Dena, The Regiment Horns and the rhythmic talents of Smokey, Ben and Demian. Future looks bright!
